iPhone Camera Showing a Black Screen? Here's Why

A black viewfinder feels like broken hardware. It almost never is. In the overwhelming majority of cases the sensor is fine and something in software is holding the camera, or refusing to draw its preview.

The fixes below are ordered by how often each one is the actual answer. Start at the top.

1. Something else is holding the camera

iOS gives the camera to one process at a time. If a video call is running in the background (FaceTime, Zoom, WhatsApp, Teams) or a dual camera app or scanner app did not shut down cleanly, the Camera app can open to a black rectangle because the sensor is already taken.

Fix: swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or double-press the Home button) and flick away every app that could plausibly use a camera. Then reopen Camera.

2. The Camera app has hung

The capture process occasionally wedges, often after switching between apps mid-recording, or when the phone is running hot.

Fix: force quit the Camera app itself and reopen it. If the viewfinder is still black, restart the iPhone. A restart clears stuck camera sessions more reliably than it has any right to, and between these first two steps you have already covered most real-world cases.

3. Check the obvious physical causes

Thirty seconds here saves a support call:

• The case. A slightly rotated case, or one with a sliding lens cover left shut, blacks out every camera app at once.
• The lens. A film of pocket grime shows up as a dark, murky image that reads as “black” in low light.
• A brand-new phone. The factory film over the camera bump is easy to miss.

4. Black in one app only: permissions

If the built-in Camera works but Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok or any third-party app shows black where the viewfinder should be, the camera is not broken. That app has no permission to use it, and a black feed is exactly how that looks.

Fix: Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. Switch the app on. If the app is not in the list at all, delete and reinstall it so it asks again.

Screen Time can also block camera access system-wide: Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Allowed Apps. Make sure Camera is allowed. When it is disabled here the Camera app icon disappears entirely, which is its own confusing symptom.

5. Preview black, photos fine

An odd one: you see black, tap the shutter anyway, and a normal photo lands in your library. The camera is capturing; the live preview is not rendering. This is a display-pipeline glitch, not damage.

Fix: force quit Camera. If it recurs, restart, and check Settings → General → Software Update. This class of bug is the kind that point releases quietly fix.

6. After an iOS update

A small number of black-camera reports follow immediately after a system update, while the phone is still reindexing and finishing background work.

Fix: give it ten minutes on charge, then restart once. If an update genuinely introduced a camera regression, the follow-up fix arrives fast, so install point updates promptly rather than sitting on them.

7. After a drop: the hardware case

This is the scenario where a black screen can mean real damage. The camera module and its ribbon connector do not love impacts, and a hard drop can kill the feed while the rest of the phone works perfectly.

The clarifying test: restart the phone, then try the camera in more than one app, both lenses.

• Front camera works but rear is black (or the reverse) in every app, after a restart → the module or connector side of that camera is the likely culprit. That is a repair. Book Apple or an authorised service.
• Camera and flashlight are both dead → strong hardware signal. The flash lives in the same assembly, and losing both at once is the classic module-failure pattern.

There is no settings toggle that fixes a damaged module. What a repair costs depends on the model; what it costs to confirm is nothing: Apple’s diagnostics will tell you either way.

Still black after all seven?

The remaining moves, in order: check for an iOS update, then try a settings reset (Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings; your data stays, your preferences reset), and finally Apple Support with diagnostics. By this point the odds have shifted toward hardware, and guessing further costs more than a diagnostic that is free.

A different black screen
