iPhone Overheating: What's Normal, What Isn't, What to Do
Warm is normal, hot is a signal. Why iPhones overheat while charging, after an update, while filming, or for no obvious reason, and the fixes that work.

Every iPhone gets warm. The processor, the battery and the charger all shed heat, and a phone that is never warm is a phone that is never doing anything.
The question that matters is which side of a line you are on: warm during heavy work is physics; hot during light work is a symptom. This guide sorts the common situations onto the right side of that line, with the fixes that actually move the needle.
The quick fixes, before anything else
When the phone is uncomfortably hot right now:
- Take the case off. Cases trap heat; removing one is the single fastest cooldown.
- Get it out of the sun. Direct sunlight heats a phone faster than anything it can do to itself.
- Unplug it. Charging is a heat source; stop stacking it on top of whatever else is running.
- Close the heavy app: the game, the navigation, the camera.
- Let it idle a few minutes. Do not put it in a fridge; rapid cooling condenses moisture inside the body. Room temperature and patience.
Overheating while charging
Charging always generates heat, and fast charging generates more. On its own that warmth is normal and the phone manages it. iOS quietly slows charging when the battery runs warm.
It becomes a problem through stacking: charging while gaming, charging while navigating on a dashboard mount in the sun, charging while filming. Each is a heat source; together they outrun the phone’s ability to shed it.
- Charge with the case off if the phone runs warm.
- Prefer charging during idle time over charging mid-use.
- Cheap, out-of-spec chargers and cables run hotter, so stick to certified ones.
- Wireless charging runs warmer than cable by nature; a hot phone on a hot pad in summer is a bad combination.
Overheating after an update
The one or two days after a major iOS update are a special case: the phone reindexes your photo library, rebuilds Spotlight, re-syncs iCloud and finishes housekeeping in the background. Warmth and faster battery drain during that window are expected behaviour, not a broken update.
Leave it plugged in overnight, and it settles. If the heat persists past a couple of days, treat it as the “no reason” case below.
Overheating “for no reason”
A phone that is hot while apparently doing nothing is doing something you cannot see. In order of likelihood:
- Background indexing after an update, a restore, or importing a large batch of photos.
- A runaway app. Check Settings → Battery and look at per-app usage for the last 24 hours. An app you barely opened sitting at the top of the list is your culprit; force quit it, and if it repeats, reinstall or delete it.
- Background App Refresh churning through a backlog. Trim it under Settings → General → Background App Refresh.
- Poor signal. A phone hunting for weak cellular signal runs its radio hard. Heat that only appears in one building or one commute leg is this.
- An ageing battery. A battery well past its prime runs hotter under the same load. Settings → Battery → Battery Health — below roughly 80% capacity, service is the honest fix.
Overheating while recording video
This one we know intimately, because it is the ceiling our own users hit. Video capture runs the sensor, the image signal processor and the video encoder simultaneously, and recording two cameras at once runs two of everything, plus live compositing. It is the most demanding sustained workload most phones ever see.
The pattern: the phone warms over minutes, iOS throttles, and on a long take it will eventually stop the recording to protect itself. That is by design, not a fault.
What actually helps, in order of effect:
- Drop the resolution. 4K → 1080p roughly halves the encoding load. For social video nobody sees the difference after platform compression.
- Take the case off before a long take, not after the warning.
- Shade and airflow. Filming in direct summer sun is the hardest case there is.
- Do not charge while filming. Two heat sources, one chassis.
- Shoot in segments. Three five-minute takes shed heat between them; one fifteen-minute take does not.
- Plan storage beforehand with the file size calculator. Deleting files in a panic mid-shoot keeps the phone awake and hot at exactly the wrong moment.
The temperature warning screen
At the extreme, iOS shows a black screen with a thermometer: “iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it.” Before that point it has already been protecting itself in stages: dimmed screen, paused charging, disabled flash, throttled performance, and eventually stopped camera recording.
None of this damages the phone; it exists to prevent damage. Let it cool at room temperature and it comes back on its own. The thing that does take long-term damage from frequent heat is the battery. Heat is the main thing that ages lithium cells. Managing heat is battery care.
When it is worth a service visit
- Hot during genuinely light use, repeatedly, after you have ruled out the causes above
- Battery Health well below 80%, or the phone shutting down before the percentage runs out
- Heat concentrated in one spot alongside a bulging screen or case gap. Stop using it and have it seen promptly
- The temperature warning appearing in normal indoor conditions
Otherwise: a warm iPhone doing heavy work is a phone behaving exactly as designed.
